Fund honours slain son

Generations of future engineering students will come to know Andy Moffitt.
The University of Ottawa dedicated a scholarship totalling $139,000 yesterday in memory of Moffitt, 23, who was stabbed in the heart when he tried to break up a fight Dec. 23 at a Sandy Hill bar.
Solicitor General and Leeds-Grenville MPP Bob Runciman told about 30 of Moffitt's friends, teachers and family members the province is committed to matching any donation made to the fund, spearheaded by his family and the engineering faculty.
In an emotional address, the mother of the murdered Brockville computer whiz lamented the death of her easygoing son who always played the peacekeeper.
"There will never be closure to his death. We'll be asking for the rest of our lives why this act of violence had to happen," Paulette Moffitt said.
She told the group how her son cheated death twice before, battling a congenital heart defect at birth and beating a virus two years ago that caused a heart attack.
She said a strong bond linked Moffitt with his brothers Rod Jr., 27, and Michael, 12.
"Bonding is a wonderful thing. Our special bond with Andy will hold us together."
Paulette said Michael lost his mentor and ends each day by wrapping himself in his beloved brother's quilt and saying a prayer and goodnight.
Henry Danninger, 26, is charged with second-degree murder. He was released on bail in March and will return to court in October for a two-week preliminary hearing.
